Description
Function of an Ignition Coil:
- Voltage Conversion: The primary function of an ignition coil is to convert the relatively low voltage from the car’s battery (typically 12 volts) into a much higher voltage (up to 40,000 volts or more). This high voltage is necessary to create a strong spark at the spark plugs for ignition.
- Spark Generation: The ignition coil generates a high-voltage electrical pulse, often referred to as a “coil spark,” that travels through the spark plug wires and reaches the spark plugs located in each cylinder of the engine.
- Timed Spark: The ignition system is coordinated with the engine’s timing system. The spark generated by the ignition coil needs to occur at a precise moment when the piston is near the top of its compression stroke, ensuring efficient combustion.
